I printed off progress reports for each student today, and highlighted any areas where I think more effort and focus are needed. There is only about a month left before the end of term 2, so every assignment moving forward can make a difference. Some big things to make note of- Concours, Mesopotamian Gods project, Space project (not assigned yet), Math unit tests (one on Monday!). Thank you for your support!

Tomorrow is the Grade 7 Open House at WGSS. This a great opportunity to preview next year. 6:30-8:30pm (5:45 for French Immersion).

A much better day, behaviour (and somewhat work ethic) wise, merci les amis. Fluid seating is still suspended, and we’ll see about where we eat our snack and lunch tomorrow. One day is not enough of a demonstration of change. But we are moving in the right direction.

This afternoon we watched an amazing performance by Saphire, the circus artist. The things she could do with a contact ball, hula hoops and poi! So cool!!

If you have yet to pay the second instalment of the Camp Jubilee payments, please do so as soon as possible. Thank you.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE check in with your child on their math. We are dividing decimals right now and they could benefit from another person reviewing the steps with them. Many finished their work in class today, so you can make up questions to practice, ex 4.721 / 7 (decimal /whole number) 32.87 / 0.4 (decimal by decimal)

Les Devoirs:

  • Education Physique (on commence au gymnase)
  • Math- Dividing Decimals booklet
  • Last Ski/SB trip
  • Gr 7 Boys Bball practice 7:45am

Our day ended on not the best note possible, you should ask your child about it.

I have asked everyone to take a quick peek at the moon this evening. At best- a quick sketch and description of what it looks like, to be discussed tomorrow.

I conferenced with each student today about their last réponse de lecture. Students should be seeing an improvement in their scores if they are taking my feedback into consideration, and applying it to their writing. I gave each student specific areas to focus on.

Les Devoirs:

  • Orchestre demain
  • Math- Dividing Decimals booklet due demain
  • SN- observe, sketch et décrit la lune
  • Second camp payment due this week!

le 25 janvier

Next Thursday from 6:30-8:30 is the WGSS Grade 7 Open House (Mrs Sollows sent out the flyer earlier this week). This a great opportunity to tour the school, meet some older students and the teachers, and learn about the exciting opportunities that will be available next year. French Immersion students should arrive at 5:45pm for a separate event. Representatives from WGSS will be coming soon with important course selection information and instructions.

The second Camp payment is due next Thursday, $75. Online or cheque please.

Les Devoirs:

  • SN- The Farthest Questions due lundi
  • Boys Bball Practice lundi au diner
  • Gr 7 Boys and Girls first basketball game mercredi

Bonne fin de semaine!

I am seeing a recurring theme this week.

Today I spoke to them at length about the writing they are submitting on their reading responses. I am not satisfied with the overall quality of writing in general (both content and structure), despite spending countless lessons explaining and practicing different components of the French language, none of which should be new to them. It is not that they are incapable, it is that they are choosing NOT to put in the effort and time to produce quality work. The level of work they are submitting will not serve them well next year and the years to come. Not only is the structure of their writing inadequate, but most are not consistently (or at all) showing any attempt at higher level thinking. They must begin digging deeper, using their critical thinking, inference and connection skills to produce more thoughtful writing.

I suggested a few tricks to assist themselves. First, read your writing back out loud, exactly as it is written. Does it make sense? Have you mixed up homophones? Have you written things that are said different in French (I am hungry in English is I have hunger in French)? Also, try having a conversation with someone about what you read. Ask questions, predict, infer, see what they have to say. Lastly, I have given feedback on previous responses. I have circled errors. Are you considering those on your next responses? You should be. Making the same mistakes again and again and expecting things to change is Einstein’s definition of insanity. And Mme is knocking on that door…

General behaviour was also an issue today. I am tired of talking over everyone. Especially when it is to their benefit. If this means they miss out on verbal explanations or hints,  so be it. Instead of reviewing the outline and expectations for the Hammurabi’s Laws comic strip assignment, since many students were choosing not to listen, I set them to work and we will see what kind of work is produced. Each student should have a copy of the laws and the BD outline. Good copy papers are on the front table. Thank you to those students who came to me this afternoon for clarification and assistance. I will always be available to you should you seek me out. You should pat yourself on the back for acting responsibly.

I’m hoping Division 1 learned a lesson today. I returned their summary/reflection assignment on Mesopotamian government and commented on how terribly done basically everyone’s was. Not only in content, but structure as well. I decided we would learn from the situation, and we are redoing the assignment. We reexamined the texts, filled out a better graphic organizer, and took a bit more time to construct a well-written paragraph according to the prompt (see below). I will be collecting these tomorrow. I have been consistently noticing how poor our French writing has been this term, despite spending countless hours focusing on grammar, spelling, conjugating, etc. I will continue to hold everyone to the grade level expectations that I know they are capable of, and will not hesitate to return assignments I feel are inadequate and ask for them to be redone. Thank you for your continued support.
