Hopefully by now you have read the school newsletter that outlines students receiving a box of rapid antigen tests. The district has outlined that the boxes must be given directly to each child’s parent/guardian, and that students are not permitted to bring the tests home themselves. Hopefully we will be seeing you next week for conferences, where we can easily give you your box then, if not, we will hold onto the box until you can come and grab it (sorry).
The students started a really fun project today- Create a Utopian Society. Initial discussions today were very interesting!
Today was a VERY productive day! We finally made it to the Gym to do some fitness and play basketball. Students worked diligently to finish their English tasks and spent time with me demonstrating their proficiency in Math (multiplying decimals). Always a mad dash towards the end of the term and reports.
Reminder that the English 8 Honours exam is on Tuesday, 3:15pm at WGSS.
Hope everyone got where they needed to be safely this morning! So nice to see the sun come out, the students even got their collaborative time outside (which never happens!).
We had an amazing class discussion about sameness in The Giver and how in introduction of certain things (colour, books, religion, clothing, weather) would disrupt their “perfect society”. I was super impressed with the ideas and discussions that we had, and almost everyone shared something, so great! We then channeled that thinking into a snow globe activity where students picked either an aspect of sameness or something in our lives that is negative and, imagining that they shake the snow globe to change it, how the world would be better. Students are coming up with some beautiful snow globes. I can’t wait to hang them around the room for everyone to enjoy.
We also continued working on our one-pagers. They are starting to show some great thinking and connection to the novel. Both the snow globe and the one-pager are due EOD demain (firm deadline). All criteria, rubric and other relevant information can be found on Teams.
Students will be asked to demonstrate their proficiency related to multi-digit decimal multiplication in a one-on-one conference with me tomorrow.
We accomplished a lot today! We officially completed Concours in class! I have heard all 29 speeches (which I have never accomplished in a single week EVER). Each student should be so proud of their effort! Lots of development of abilities was visible throughout the process. Also thanks to everyone who asked good questions to the speakers, always makes my job so much easier. The last step for students will be to self-reflect on the Concours process and final presentation (next week) which will be included in their term 2 report.
We also continued multiplying decimals. It’s often difficult to explain and for some to grasp why the answer gets smaller when multiplying, so hopefully the activity we did today, and my attempts are explaining were somewhat helpful. We will move onto multi-digit by multi-digit decimal multiplication next week.
Lastly, we finished The Giver! I always love hearing students thoughts once the last chapter is read 🙂 We then chatted about theme, what it is and some strategies to try and decipher what theme is being portrayed. Also a bit tricky but definitely an important literary device to work through. Students began trying to figure out theme in The Giver, and are in the initial steps on their One-Pager (due next Friday). I have posted all the stuff displayed in class in Teams. Reminder- there will be 3 in class work periods before the FIRM Friday EOD deadline.
Mr V left a LOT of information for students on the board yesterday. I took a pic and it is now posted on Teams. Please make sure you are dedicating enough attention to tasks assigned by Mr V. His day is just as important as any day that I am here, and when you are behind on submitting things to him it’s very difficult to keep on track because of the long delay in between his days. Thanks in advance!
Reminder- tomorrow is No School for students and Monday is Family Day. I hope you are able to spend some time together.
mardi et jeudi- Ball intramurals
vendredi- The Giver One-Pager due EOD
WGSS course selection: MyEd submission and blue form brought back to me by Feb 24
want a teacher recommendation (ELA 8 Hon/Accelerated Math? STUDENT come see me and ask!) also fill out the ONLINE application.
WGSS Course Selection on MYEdBC opens today. I gave each student a little slip of paper with the correct student number and password to access MyEd to confirm their courses. Forms can be returned to me as of tomorrow. Students were reminded this morning to come see me personally to request a teacher recommendation for ELA 8 Honours and Accelerated Math (if they asked me before I have forgotten…) Hopefully you’re able to catch the virtual parent session this evening for more information.
Pour Mr V: affiche- LJ, QL, LT, SM, OR, AH, RJ
terminer le scripte et apporter les matériaux pour les presentations
Hope you had a lovely weekend. We watched the Super Bowl and ate yummy food, always a good time 🙂
Concours!! It has begun! I am super proud of the 14 students who presented this morning! Amazing! All of your hard work over the last 5 weeks absolutely showed today. Also, kudos to everyone asking good questions! Can’t wait to hear more tomorrow!
This afternoon we read chapters 19 and 20 in The Giver. Easily the toughest chapters in the book. We then spent some time in small group discussions, hopefully anyone who needed to vent or ask questions was able to do so. We only have 3 chapters left!
Band is starting back up tomorrow! (you should’ve gotten an email!) Students are reminded to bring their instruments and music books.
WGSS Course Selection opens tomorrow (there is a virtual parent info session right?) Students need their student numbers (not the one the wrote on the paper…) and the password is Student$35. If they need their number they can ask me tomorrow. Online confirmation and forms are due on Feb 24. **reminder** if your child is wishing to apply for English Honours 9 or Math 9, please have THEM come ask me for a teacher recommendation.
Basketball intramurals begin tomorrow at lunch! *Tomorrow’s games have been moved to Thursday.
Concours continue demain
Orchestre demain (bring instruments and music book!)
In our Weekly On Partage, students were asked if they’d prefer to have 3 arms or 3 legs. The overwhelming majority chose 3 arms, providing various reasons as to why. Hopefully our weekly share-outs help them next week- Concours begins! We have been steadily working our way through the process of writing our speeches, thoughtful revising and correcting them, this week our focus was on the presentation aspect- first in a solo self-evaluation then in small groups. Students are reminded and encouraged to take some time each day over the long weekend to PRACTICE their speeches! As I said today, this is a major part of your Francais proficiency this term, adequate effort and preparation are noticeable!
This afternoon I introduced students to Spaces- on online portfolio platform that I am piloting this year. Students have been writing a story add on to The Giver inspired by chapter 17 and ‘what if’. They typed them up this afternoon and shared on Spaces, with me and with the class. We will continue to play around with Spaces throughout the rest of the year. I am hopeful that we can also have you join us on Spaces, to see how your child is doing, that may be a possibility during Term 2 conferences, but that is still up in the air.
WGSS Course Selection opens next Tuesday. There should be a Parent Info seminar that evening. Reminder, the number I wrote on your child’s paper is wrong (sorry). It is the number they should know (used for Office log in etc). If they can’t remember, I can give it to them on Monday. The password for everyone is Student$35. You get the option to change it immediately after logging in the first time.
